Kids on Politics: Donald Trump

Kids always have interesting and original things to say, but what about when it comes to politics? If children are our future, we should be lending them an ear to find out what the future generations think about our current world leaders.

For the first of the Kids on Politics series, I spoke to my eight-year-old sister to find out what she had to say, and I think we could all take something from her credible answers.

Does children's innocence shade them from the negativity surrounding the political power structure? Or have they already conjured up their own opinions about our worldly politicians?

Do you know who Donald Trump is?

The President of America.

What do you know about Donald Trump?

That he’s very mean and he does the wrong things. He’s blocked up a wall around America and doesn’t let cultures in.

Which cultures, do you know?

No… But I know he doesn’t let a certain culture in.

Okay. Do you know anything else that he does?

He runs America and kind of tells us what to do. He is a bit like a parent but for more than one person, and he’s a bit meaner than a normal parent – unless you were his son or daughter, he might be a bit kinder to you.

What makes him different to a normal parent?

I think he just has a different job to most people. He’s got different abilities to tell people what to do, and not many parents are famous like Donald Trump.

I personally don’t think that he should be president.

Why’s that?

He is just a bit rude, to the, um, what’s it called? [Whispers: I can’t remember what it’s called, what’s a group of people called?]

Civilisation? Society?

Yeah, the society and the people who live around him. Sometimes he says things people think he shouldn’t and he gets a bit angry.

Why do you think so many people believe he should be President?

I don’t know. I think, maybe people actually like him more than I do, or people just didn’t know what he would be like because they hadn’t met him before.

I think he’s a good man on the inside, he just needs to show it on the outside.

People have been saying, that his name should be Donald Fart! Donald… Trump [laughs]

So do you think there is good in everyone?

I believe there is good in everyone, somewhere deep down in their body, and they sometimes just show the wrong side of themselves – because even bandits and robbers, somewhere, deep down in them, there is that bit of good. They need to show that and not stealing and murdering and hurting people.

If you don’t want to be in prison and have an awful life, you need to show people the good part of you.
