Best Friends for Life

When was the last time you saw your BFFL? That best friend you did everything with, had a secret handshake with, and told your deepest darkest secrets to. I'm seeing mine today, and I don't care if I'm 21, I'm still as giddy as my ten year old self when she used to stay over.

Anna and Me, London, January 2019

Today, my friend is visiting from London and I am so excited. It's the first time she has come to see me at uni. I only went to see her at uni in January, and considering we've been studying for the last three years it seems odd that we're only visiting each other now.

Granted, our student schedules are pretty jam-packed, and having money for train fare is like some sort of foreign concept.

BUT, today is the day. She has picked the rainiest, windiest day we've had in ages to take a five hour train to little old Penryn for the first time. I get to show her my oh-so-grown-up-uni-life and cannot wait.

Anna and I have been friends since year three, when life was as simple as pretending to be a fairy on a daily basis. On the last day of primary school, when we went our separate ways, I remember crying because I thought I wasn't going to see her again.

Shortly after primary school ended, we both went to the same street dance class, so I got to see her once a week. We used to dance together all the time, making up shows and videos, and even taught our own dance class in year six like proper cool kids...

When our street dance class came to an end and secondary school was in full swing, I was lucky to see her even twice a year.

Then we both went to university and were limited to annual meet-ups in Boston Tea Party whenever our visits home conveniently overlapped.

But, it's been ten years since primary school ended, and no matter how infrequently we see each other, our friendship is still going strong.

It doesn't matter if we don't see each other for six months, because when we do it's like we revert back to being those same giggly twelve year old's we once were. Whilst we no longer put on talent shows or wear matching t-shirts, we can still talk for England, I'll tell you that.

Now that we are both 21, it feels as though we are at a pivotal moment in our adult lives where things are about to get rather serious. Deadlines are approaching, job hunts are on the go and 2019 is whizzing past so quickly that we'll be 25 in a minute.

In all of this stress and seriousness, it is a relief to be surrounded by friends that I love who help me forget about all of those worries.

Over the years that I have known Anna, our friendship has not changed. We still talk for hours on end, crying with laughter at the most frivolous and ridiculous things that have happened since we last saw each other.

Growing up together has made all of life's plot twists and uncertainties so much more bearable, and humorous now that I think of it.

It's friends like these that make everything you once worried about seem manageable.

At whatever point of stress or change we are going through in our lives, friends are great for turning your troubles into something to laugh about; something to reminisce on when you're older and wiser, looking back to when you were considerably naive about how life works.

It feels like that will always be the case. Whether we're ten, twenty-one or forty.

It is important to be surrounded by people you love, who can help you deal with your first crush, first break-up, first job, first house and everything in between.

These people will love you back unconditionally and give you a reason to smile about all of life's wonderful little mishaps.

Some friendships come and go, some are here to stay.
